Facility Enhancement Award
Programs who have prioritized Adult Education environments through development or renovation of a building OR substantial upgrade to their existing Adult Education facility. Beaufort Adult Education received this award for the substantial upgrade they have completed at their Bluffton Goodwill location. Dr. Murrell stated that creating a space that promotes learning amongst students not only benefit the students, as teachers will also find it easier and more enjoyable to teach students who are focused on their lessons. I am very thankful and blessed for the support that we have received from Bluffton Goodwill for the use of their facility to serve our students from the Bluffton and Hilton Head area.
Stepped Up to the Plate Award
Presented to programs that developed innovative solutions to address the many challenges that arose during the past years. The Beaufort Adult Education program serves the Beaufort County Detention Center, offering the GED program to eligible students. Pre-COVID instructors worked directly with students in the facility. The facility had no Internet access available to either teacher or students, and resources were limited to “hard copy” resources. The resources were typically outdated and restricted in scope. Since COVID, the Detention Center and Adult Ed. have worked closely to leverage technology to serve the students. The classroom has been equipped with a large screen display and the WebEx platform is utilized to deliver instruction. The change to a “virtual” environment has increased the learning and success rate of the students considerably. The internet can now be leveraged to allow students, through the instructor, to utilize real time, current resources, necessary for their success. The technology has also increased the efficiency of the process. We work closely with the liaison at the detention center to schedule instruction, deliver testing and support to all students. This partnership is critical, as the student population is very transient and difficult to schedule and service. The blending of technology and conventional methods has been “fine-tuned” to deliver the maximum possibility of success for our students. Because of this success, we are now working on expanding the student’s access to technology through personal devices that allow secure and safe access to internet resources. The combination of “old” and “new” methods of instruction helps us better serve our student population. We will continue to partner, increasing opportunity and the access of learning choices, to a larger population of students. The future holds tremendous potential to help and support an underserved population, which improves the world for all.
