Beaufort County School District requests community input on student cellphone usage

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, May 29, 2024

BEAUFORT -  Beaufort County School District (BCSD) invites students, families, staff, and the greater community to provide perspectives on student cellphone usage.

At a joint Student Improvement Council (SIC) Board of Education (BOE) Meeting in March, SIC members brought up concerns regarding the impact of student cellphone usage. Upon subsequent BOE discussions on the topic, they directed Dr. Rodriguez to explore possible revisions to the current administrative regulation surrounding the use of electronic communications devices in our schools.

As part of this exploratory process to ensure all stakeholder’s perspectives are heard, BCSD is seeking community feedback/thoughts regarding student cellphone usage. Students, families, staff, and the greater community can provide input through the BCSD Connected platform.

The cellphone usage feedback forum www.connectbeaufortschools.org/cell-phone will be open through June 5, 2024. The platform link is also being sent to BCSD families via email and is shared on the district’s website and Facebook page.

BCSD is proactively preparing for potential state guidance on the topic as legislators in Columbia are also currently debating the issue. Budget bills already passed by the SC Senate and House of Representatives include a provision that would require districts to adopt a policy stopping students from using unauthorized electronic devices during school hours.
