District names 2022-23 Induction Teacher of the Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, May 15, 2023

Mauriana Sciullo was recently announced as the 2022-23 Beaufort County School District Induction Teacher of the Year. Sciullo is a first-year, fourth grade teacher at Pritchardville Elementary School who goes the extra mile to support her students. “I try to go to my students’ sporting events and activities to show that I care about them as a whole, and not just inside the classroom,” said Sciullo. She credits her own teachers with inspiring her to have a career education, even during the most challenging days. “I had a lot of impactful teachers growing up, so working with my students and seeing how I am making an impact keeps me in the profession every day.”

Ms. Sciullo exemplifies the values of our calling as educators, to celebrate, enrich, and grow each of her students, through intentional efforts to honor their unique gifts and perspectives.

A University of Pittsburgh graduate, Sciullo’s nomination, written responses, and work this academic year demonstrate her outstanding professionalism, high expectations, exceptional planning skills, strong classroom management, and reflective practices. Sciullo’s dedication to the profession has a substantial impact on the lives of her students and the school community.

“Ms. Sciullo has a remarkable ability to connect with her students on a personal level, and it shows,” said Lead District Mentor Teacher Kyria Hartley. “Every time I step foot in her classroom her students are engaged in meaningful conversations, hands-on experiences, or deep discussions about the latest development in one of the novels they are reading.” Hartley explains that although Sciullo’s delivery of instruction may seem effortless, it takes an immense amount of time, dedication, and content knowledge. “Ms. Sciullo exemplifies the values of our calling as educators, to celebrate, enrich, and grow each of her students, through intentional efforts to honor their unique gifts and perspectives.”

The Beaufort County School District Induction Teacher of the Year title is awarded to induction teachers in their first year of teaching. The selection process for this award was extensive, and many great candidates were nominated. District lead mentors and school administrators recommended their top-performing induction teachers and the nominees completed an application with written responses, which were then carefully reviewed by a team.

Sciullo has been submitted for consideration for the SC Induction Teacher of the Year, sponsored by South Carolina ASCD, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with a primary mission of improving the teaching and learning of all students.
