District students take a memorable trip to Howard University

Eleven students from the Beaufort County School District travelled to Washington, D.C. this past November to tour Howard University. The trip was sponsored by the Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Columbia (SC). Founded in 1867, Howard University is a private research university comprised of 14 schools and colleges, and a leading Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

During the three-day trip, students were afforded a fantastic opportunity to experience campus life, meet Professor Phylicia Rashad, a renowned actress best know for portraying Claire Huxtable on "The Crosby Show", and visit the National Museum of African American History & Culture.

Our students are especially grateful to community leader, Pastor James Moore and the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church who provided transportation from Beaufort to Columbia, SC at no cost. Parents and guardians paid the $250 fee to cover transportation from Columbia to Howard University.

Words cannot adequately express the appreciation our students, parents and guardians have for the support of Pastor Moore and Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. This trip provided an opportunity to experience first-hand life on a HBCU campus in our nation's capital.
