Three Hilton Head Island High School Students and Educator take 1st place at State Fair

BEAUFORT – Twelve Hilton Head Island High School (HHIHS) students earned awards at the 2023 South Carolina State Fair art competition. Three of those students placed first in their categories.
Eleventh grader Maeve Dolan won 1st place in 2-D for her self-portrait using charcoal.
Jason Jose, also an eleventh grader, won 1st place in photography, capturing an abstract image of cars.
Ninth grader Veronica Gardiner-Lohmann won 1st place in 3-D for her tapestry.
HHIHS Media and Digital Arts Teacher, Kimberlee Smith, also earned 1st place recognition in the Professional Artist category for her entry, Skol Barbie, that was inspired by her daughter.
“All of the visual art teachers at HHIHS entered student work. I feel that if I ask students to put their work up for competition, I should be willing to do so as well,” said Smith. “My hope is that this illustrates to my students to be tenacious, especially in regard to their dreams and goals.”

Ninth Grade
Sarah Hill- Honorable Mention
The award-winning artwork was displayed at the SC State Fair in Columbia.
