Social Studies
Welcome to the Beaufort County School District’s social studies resource page. Our educators know that it is essential that our students receive real world connections to the concepts that they are learning.
The goal of Beaufort County Schools K-12 Social Studies is to provide students with an opportunity to become informed, productive citizens. This requires an understanding of historical inquiry, geography, economic responsibilities, participation in civic affairs, and the skills needed for personal decision-making.
Content
Elementary teachers in kindergarten, first and second grade introduce the essential concepts of historical change, geographic location, the rule of law and the role of markets. Third, fourth and fifth grade teachers introduce the history and geography of South Carolina and the United States. In the middle grades, students develop and enhance their understanding of history through the study of people and events from earliest man to the present. The core Social Studies courses at the high school include Human Geography, United States History, American Government and Economics as well as other elective courses.
The South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards establishes competency goals and objectives for the teaching and learning of social studies in our state. It is the foundation upon which teachers and curriculum specialists in each school system develop course content, select instructional materials and plan for instruction.
