Multilingual Learner Program (MLP)
Multilingual Learner Program (MLP)
The BCSD Multilingual Learner Program (MLP) provides a language rich environment, in which all students are prepared for academic success. The program employs an asset-based approach, recognizing and valuing the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of students. The ongoing commitment to our program ensures that all students have access to high quality educational opportunities while meeting federal and state mandates. We will continue empowering multilingual learners to thrive academically as they navigate their journey toward graduation and a successful career.
The Multilingual Learner Program focuses on:
- Identification and Assessment: Identify students whose primary language is not English via the South Carolina Enrollment Survey/Home Language Survey.
- Comprehensive Language Services: Deliver instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing for multilingual learners using suitable program service models.
- Family Engagement: Communicate goals and expectations to parents in their language, fostering their involvement in their children's education.
- Professional Development: Offer training for MLP personnel on effective instructional teaching strategies and assessment.
- Ongoing Evaluation: Continuously assess and monitor the MLP to ensure the academic progress of multilingual learners.
Translation and Interpretation Support for Families
The Beaufort County School District has a committed group of Bilingual Liaisons, that support partnerships among schools and families who speak another language other than English. This team plays a vital role in communicating with multilingual families to address any questions or concerns regarding their child's education and provide them with resources. They connect families with community agencies, facilitate meetings to share instructional goals and expectations, and encourage parents to engage in their children's learning.
