Behavior management specialist named  district’s 2018 ‘Support Person of the Year’

BEAUFORT – A May River High School behavior management specialist was named today as the Beaufort County School District’s 2018 Support Person of the Year.  The selection of Keisha Glover was announced at a breakfast recognizing schools’ individual honorees.

Support staff can also include social workers, school nurses, bookkeepers, office managers, teacher assistants, school secretaries and technology and data specialists.

“This is mind-blowing,” Glover said.  “I absolutely love my job, and it’s such an honor to be recognized in this way.”

Glover is completing her first year as May River High’s behavior management specialist, a role in which she supports children with emotional or behavioral issues that affect their ability to learn.  May River Principal Todd Bornscheuer said Glover also assists teachers as they work with students who face challenges inside and outside the classroom.

“She genuinely cares about each person she comes into contact with,” Bornscheuer said.  “I believe she knows every name and some details of every one of our 1,215 students and nearly 100 staff members.”

Bornscheuer said behavior management specialists can struggle with gaining the trust of teachers who are dealing with individual or group behavior issues in their classrooms.  “Keisha has never had that issue,” he said.  “She invests in researching the problem and creating a plan for assisting the teacher.  Her collaborative approach and genuine interest in solutions have earned her respect in even the toughest situations.”

In addition to her regular job responsibilities, Glover is the faculty sponsor for May River High’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes group and also works with Boys’ and Girls’ Club of the Lowcountry.  This summer, she will help coordinate the “Career Launch” job readiness program through the Boys’ and Girls’ club in which high school students will learn build employability skills, practice resume writing and conduct mock job interviews.

Superintendent Jeff Moss said that Glover is an excellent representative for the school district’s diverse array of support staff.

“A strong support staff is the foundation of every strong school,” Moss said.  “Those are the people who do the work that makes it possible for teaching and learning to take place in the classroom.”

Glover was awarded a $250 gas card from Parker’s, which sponsored today’s breakfast.  Parker’s operates 51 convenience stores across South Carolina and Georgia.  Parker’s funded the event through its “Fueling the Community” program, which gives one cent of every gallon of gas sold on the first Wednesday of each month to local schools.

At Parker’s, we have a deep commitment to investing in education and are happy to sponsor the district's 2018 Support Person of the Year Breakfast again this year,” said Parker’s President and CEO Greg Parker. “It truly takes a dedicated team to help our children succeed, and today we are proud to recognize Ms. Glover.  We applaud her for the difference she makes for the students at May River High School."

In addition to Glover, the district also honored each individual school’s 2018 Support Person of the Year at today’s event.
