Adult Ed

Your decision to become a part of the BCSD Adult Education Program is one that will change your life. It’s a key step for you to reach your personal and professional goals. We offer programs to help you earn a high school diploma, GED or certifications in Para Pro and WINS. We also offer courses in ESL (English Second Language) basic computer skills and test-prep for ASVAB remediation.

Adult Ed administrators, teachers and office personnel are dedicated to your success and take pride in your accomplishments.

Programs

ASVAB

The ASVAB test prep class is for adults who want to join the military. ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students. ASVAB class is taught on Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the King Street site.

High School Diploma

A total of 24 units in the following coursework are required to meet the graduation requirements for a South Carolina high school diploma.

A minimum of 60 hours of online coursework are also required to be completed. Students must have access to a personal computer or attend an onsite computer lab at Adult Ed.

Some courses require an end-of-course assessment in Algebra 1/Intermediate Algebra, English 1, Biology, and US History and Constitution. This State exam is only given three times per year. Students must finish the coursework prior to taking the exam. All other courses require a proctored final examination.

To enroll, you must submit a transcript to determine the credits needed to earn a diploma. Call the Adult Ed office at 843-322-0781 for more information.

ESL (English Second Language)

The ESL program is a specific part of South Carolina Adult Education that addresses the needs of adult English language learners. The services offered through this program may include some but not all of the following:

Speaking/Grammar
Pronunciation
US Naturalization/Citizenship preparation
Civic participation
Cultural literacy
Career awareness
Workforce preparation skills
Career pathway identification and workforce training
Test preparation for higher education entrance exams

After we receive your application, we will send you an email to schedule a virtual meeting to conduct a short, verbal test (in English) to determine your level. GED

Since 1942, the tests of General Educational Development (GED) has offered adults an alternative path to earn a high school diploma. Adults who did not complete a high school program of instruction but have continued to learn through a variety of experiences they have encountered in everyday life are able to have those experiences evaluated and recognized through GED testing. And, the new computer-based GED tests offer an enhanced score report for adults to demonstrate readiness to pursue higher education, obtain jobs and job promotions and/or enlist in military service.

Computer Classes

Adult Ed's hands-on computer classes are designed to teach you basic computer skills and technical vocabulary used in every day school and work environments. During class, students will learn:

the basic parts of the computer;
how to use search engines and navigate the internet;
set up and use an email account;
type and compose letters and job resumes;
understand the basics of Microsoft Word and Excel, and more!
