Meet Our District School Counselor of the Year
Cheryl Chance Dopson is a compassionate and dedicated educator on a mission to change mindsets towards “endless possibilities” so that children and families are successful. A native of Jasper County, Mrs. Dopson’s passion for advocacy was sparked during her upbringing when her parents instilled in her a deep respect for learning and service. A proud graduate of Ridgeland High School, Mrs. Dopson’s academic journey continued at Limestone College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science, followed by a Master of Arts from Webster University, and an Educational Specialist degree from Cambridge College. Over the years, Mrs. Dopson’s career has spanned various roles, but her dedication to building the character, especially children, has remained unwavering.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Dopson has worked in diverse capacities, including 10 years as a therapeutic counselor with Coastal Empire Mental Health, and in child protective services and foster care with the Jasper County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Dopson worked with students and families to foster a positive and equitable environment. Additionally, Mrs. Dopson has over 22 years of experience as a high school counselor, where she helps students navigate academic challenges, personal struggles, and career planning. In her current role with Beaufort County Schools, Mrs. Dopson is known for her empathetic approach and her ability to connect with students on a personal level. Her authentic commitment to student development has made her a trusted resource among students, parents, and staff.
Outside of her professional life, Mrs. Dopson is a kindhearted listener and caregiver to the elderly and sick patients in her family, church and community. She enjoys singing in her church choir and is an avid sports fan, often glued to the TV cheering on her favorite teams: Commanders, Chiefs, and Warriors! Ms. Dopson is the wife of Martin Dopson and proud mother of three amazing children—Dwayne (deceased), Antwan, and Denise (Tremayne), as well as a bonus daughter, Tabatha (Marshall). She is a nana to seven beautiful grandchildren. Mrs. Dopson’s motto is simple: "If I can help someone along the way, then my living will not be in vain." Mrs. Dopson shows us every day that her living is not in vain.
