Retired educator takes oath of office, becomes

newest member of Beaufort Board of Education

BEAUFORT – A retired veteran educator took her oath of office Tuesday night as the newest member of the Beaufort County Board of Education.

Cynthia Gregory-Smalls will occupy the seat vacated by Michael Rivers, who was elected in November to the South Carolina House of Representatives.  She will represent District 3, which includes Lady’s Island, St. Helena Island and parts of downtown Beaufort.

Gregory-Smalls’s 32 years as a Beaufort County teacher and administrator included 10 years of service as an assistant principal at St. Helena Elementary School.

Closing the achievement gap between white and minority students should be a top priority for the district, Gregory-Smalls said, with a focus on addressing those gaps early in the elementary grades.  She also advocates improved skills training and more effective use of technology to assist students who may not be interested in a college career, but interested in obtaining a technical certification.

Gregory-Smalls said that she has been attending Board meetings and keeping up with current district issues in preparation for her new role.

“My main focus will always be on our students,” she said.  “It’s going to take all of us working together to make all of them successful.”
