Candidates for interim superintendent of the Beaufort County School District will be interviewed Tuesday, May 29, by the county Board of Education.

The board may decide Tuesday evening whether to enter negotiations with a specific candidate, or to invite several back for more in-depth follow-up interviews, said Earl Campbell, chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Education.

“I understand we have some very strong candidates to talk with on Tuesday,” he said. “I think the Board is looking for an interim superintendent to bring stability, to help us with other challenges we need to address, and then we will probably conduct a national search for the permanent superintendent starting this fall.”

The interviews come two weeks after Superintendent Dr. Jeff Moss and the school board mutually agreed to part ways effective July 31, 2018.

As of Friday, May 25, there were seven candidates scheduled for interviews. Several are experienced administrators from school districts similar to Beaufort County.

“We are wrapping up this school year, but it’s a surprisingly quick turn-around through summer to get ready for the next school year,” Board Vice-Chair Geri Kinton said. “We are a large school system spread across a geographically large area, and we have a lot of moving parts to keep the system running smoothly, especially with schools re-opening in about 10 weeks.”

Tuesday’s interviews are scheduled for executive session, but any action resulting from the interviews will be taken in public.

The South Carolina School Boards Association helped the school board identify possible candidates for the interim position.
