104 district students honored at banquet
as 2018 South Carolina Junior Scholars

BEAUFORT – More than 100 Beaufort County eighth-graders were honored tonight for being named Junior Scholars by the South Carolina Department of Education.

The students and their parents were recognized at a Junior Scholars Banquet sponsored by the Beaufort County School District.

“The Junior Scholars program recognizes students who have strong potential to succeed,” said Superintendent Jeff Moss.  “The challenge for these students – and for us, as educators – is making sure that potential becomes a reality.”

The banquet’s featured speaker was Eric Skipper, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of South Carolina Beaufort since 2016.  Skipper previously was Vice President of University Affairs at the University of North Georgia, where he had administrative oversight over four campuses enrolling more than 10,000 students.  He holds a B.S. in Management from Georgia Tech and a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from Florida State University.

The Junior Scholars Program was developed by the South Carolina Department of Education to identify eighth-graders with exceptional academic talent and to develop strategies for inclusion into special programs.  The program includes a process for screening, identifying and recognizing students with high scholastic achievement and intellectual ability.

Eligible students include those who scored 550 or higher on the PSAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 530 or higher on the PSAT Mathematics, or those who participated in Duke University's Talent Identification Program (TIP) during their seventh-grade years and were invited to state or grand recognition ceremonies.

Students who qualify as Junior Scholars receive an award of merit from the South Carolina Department of Education as well as information regarding summer academic experiences sponsored by South Carolina colleges and universities.  They can use that special recognition to bolster their applications to colleges and universities.
