Beaufort County students head
back to class for the first day of school

BEAUFORT – Beaufort County students began classes today as the 2019-20 school year got under way.

Frank Rodriguez, who took over as district superintendent on July 1, spent the day visiting schools and welcoming students and staff to a new academic year.

“There was so much excitement today, not just with students but also with parents and staff,” Rodriguez said.  “We’re all looking forward to a productive year.”

Five Beaufort County schools have new principals:

  • Liz Rivera, formerly an assistant principal at Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary, is now the principal of the school.

  • Alvilda Graham, formerly an assistant principal at Hilton Head Island High School, is now the principal at Beaufort Middle School.

  • Brian Ryman, formerly an assistant principal at Bluffton High, is now the principal at River Ridge Academy.

  • Steve Schidrich, formerly an assistant principal at Bluffton Middle, is now the principal at Hilton Head Island High.

  • Melissa Pender, formerly an assistant principal at Coosa Elementary, is now the school’s principal.

In addition, the district has a new Chief Instructional Services Officer.  Mary Stratos, currently principal at Forest Hill Community High School in Palm Beach County, Fla., will begin her new job on Tuesday.
