Alternative assessment is an assessment administered to students with significant disabilities who cannot participate in the regular assessment even when testing accommodations are provided.  Students must meet the alternative assessment requirements to take an alternative assessment.  The student’s Individualized Education Plan team will meet annually to determine the student’s eligibility.  For more information please visit the South Carolina Department of Education Alternate Assessment portal.

Accommodations
Accommodations are changes to how the student is learning or demonstrating their knowledge while keeping curriculum expectations the same.  Accommodations help the student access the general education curriculum.  Accommodations do not change what is taught.

Modifications
Modifications change the expectations for the student.  The student’s work expectations are different from their general education peers within the class.  Modifications can also change the standard of what the test or assignment is intended to measure.

Extended School Year
Extended School Year (ESY) is a program specifically designed for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to receive continued services in accordance with their IEP during the summer.  Eligibility for ESY services is determined by the students’ IEP team members.  The consideration for ESY is based on anticipated significant regression, nature and severity of disability, critical point in instruction, and special circumstances.  The purpose of ESY is to help students maintain current skill levels.
