Student Health & Wellness

For students to have the opportunity to achieve personal, academic, developmental, and social success, we need to create positive, safe, and health-promoting learning environments at every level, in every setting, throughout the school year.

Research shows that two components: good nutrition and physical activity before, during, and after school are strongly correlated with positive student outcomes. Beaufort County School District is committed to providing a school environment that promotes student wellness, offers students access to proper nutrition and nutrition education, and provides regular and physical activity as part of the total learning experience.

Important Information for Parents

Please read and download the letter to Parents on Medical Standing Orders/Carta de medicamentos para Padres. It outlines the Beaufort County School District’s medication policy. Please keep this policy for future reference, especially if your child will be taking prescribed and/or over-the-counter medications at school.

Childcare and School Vaccine Requirements

The SCDHEC requires specific vaccinations for students based on their age. It is very important to check with your doctor and make an appointment for your child to receive any required vaccinations. Visit the SCDHEC website to understand which vaccines are required by State law.

Immunizations

Proof of immunization must be provided to your school, without it, your student may be prevented from returning to school on time at the beginning of the year. For information about immunizations, please visit our webpage.

Vision

All students in grades s K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and at least once in grades 9 – 12 will be screened for distant vision problems. If he/she does not pass this screening, you will be notified that your child needs further evaluation by a Physician or Optometrist. Please have this letter completed and return it to your School Nurse. If your child is not in one of these grades, and you would like to have their vision screened, please send a note to your child’s Nurse and he/she will be glad to screen your child. If you choose to not have your child screened please contact the school nurse in writing at the beginning of the school year.

Hearing

All students in K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and at least once in grades 9 – 12 will have their hearing screened annually. The Nurse will refer your child to the Audiologist. If your child is not in one of these grades and you wish to have a screening, please send a note to your School Nurse and he/she will be glad to screen your child. If you choose to not have your child screened please contact the school nurse in writing at the beginning of the school year.
